Preparation of mapping and shading was made in 3 steps : selection of references, first quick overpaint to explore options and a second more detailed one.
For references, we mainly drew on the research Ragequit had already made for the game. Photos of derelict factories, petroleum station, old machinery… The art direction we wanted describes old environments, worn but in a state of working. Material have lost their reflection and colors are passed.
The first overpaint goal was to explore the various possibilites of cutting the environment in different zones depending on their paint colors. It is something you can often see in offshore petroleum station.
After a very fast mapping/shading work in the 3d scene, I made a second overpaint to determine the overall direction of this environment. Next step : do it in the 3D !
